We took first place at the Phoenix International School Film Festival in Korea for a PSA [Public Service Announcement] about bullying, titled “Dear Bullies“.

In lieu of attending the ceremony, the four students [above] sent their acceptance speech in Quicktime format, which will be projected in their stead.

Four BFIS students I worked with in Barcelona won first place for submitting their anti-bullying campaign, Dear Bullies, [click on the image above to view it] to the PSA category at the Phoenix International Film Festival in Korea.

Congratulations and great work Reid, Marcos, Alex and Patrick!

The award ceremony was held April 30th at the Korea International School.

We showed silent films that are nearly 100 years old to some 7-year-olds and they rolled on the floor laughing. Chaplin and Keaton are as relevant as ever.

Once they caught their breath, we gave them some toys to use as characters in their own stories with little or no input from us “grown-ups”. Our goal was to let them work out their own creative differences and make silent movies that made sense to them, and to them alone. Then, we helped them make simple storyboards, title pages and backdrops for their first silent movies.

Each team had to rehearse at least once in front of the camera before we yelled “Camera Rolling…” and “ACTION!”

The results are fascinating [click the image above to watch]

This week at BFIS, we made our own Public Service Announcements [PSAs].

Broadcast PSAs came into widespread use in the late 1940’s with the famous “Only you can prevent forest fires” tagline of Smokey the Bear.

The students are creating PSAs around many issues, including identity, sustainability and justice.
